NWEA (Northwest Evaluation Association) provides an assessment called MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) that allows educators and parents to track student achievement, growth, and needs in the areas of Math, Reading, and Language Arts.  These assessments are taken 3 times per school year and provide great information from academic year to academic year.  Parents are encouraged to become familiar with the NWEA by reading the document below and visiting the NWEA website at https://www.nwea.org/resources/parent-toolkit/.  Questions about NWEA may be directed to YES Principal, Heather Lucas.

On two hour delay days, child care is offered at Yorktown Elementary for students in kindergarten through fifth grades.  Parents may drop off any K-5 student at YES's main door starting at 7:30 AM.  No prior sign-up or spot reservation is necessary.  Qualified school personnel will oversee supervision.  The cost is $4.00 in cash upon arrival for each student using the child care.  Breakfast will not be served; however, students are encouraged to bring their own breakfast with them.  In case of unforeseen school closures on days that are initially delayed, parents must pick up students by 10:00 AM or a fee of $50 will be assessed to cover the cost of staffing.  Bus transportation for K-2 students will be provided to transport students to PVE at the conclusion of the delay.

YES Students to Attend Christmas Play at YHS

All YES students will be taken by bus to YHS on Wed., Dec. 3 at 11:50 AM to view the play A Christmas Carol performed by the YHS Drama Club.  YES students will have lunch on the following schedule that day:  3rd grade at 10:30; 4th grade at 11:00; and 5th grade at 11:25.  Students will return to YES at 2:10.  Please refrain from scheduling appointments during this time, as it will be difficult to remove your child from the YHS auditorium.  If you must schedule an appointment during the play, your child will need to stay at YES.  Parents gave permission when registering to allow their child to attend events on the Yorktown Community Schools campus.  If you do not wish for your child to attend the play, please send a note to your child’s teacher.

A beautiful mural has recently been added to the YES lobby.  YES students and staff enjoyed watching the progress of Indiana artist Debbie Knapp as she completed this beautiful park scene.  Another mural has been started in the main hallway at YES.  Principal Heather Lucas is pictured with two YES students.

The YES Clinic is in need of gently used or new children's sweatpants sizes 8 and up.  Donations may be dropped off in the YES office.

YES students and staff members enjoyed our annual Fall Parade.  Click below to view just a few staff members in costume.  There will be a page in the YES yearbook of students in costume.  The yearbook will be sold in February.

Mr. Kerkhoff, third grade teacher, who was the "winner" in the classroom food drive contest.

YES held a canned food drive the week of Oct. 27th.  YES families donated 1,364 food items.  Thank you to everyone who donated to help families in need that live in our community.  YES won the competition between YES and YMS, so Mr. Braun dressed in costume and led the fall parade with Miss Lucas.

Yorktown Elementary holds an annual Honor Day each year in May to recognize students for a variety of activities and achievements.  Two awards that students often receive are Perfect Attendance and Honor Roll.  Due to questions in the past, Yorktown Elementary would like to clarify the guidelines to receive these awards in May.

Yorktown Elementary All “A” Honor Roll – Students must earn an “A” in all subject areas for each of the first 3 quarters.  The 4th quarter is not considered since it is not yet complete at the time of the awards day.

Yorktown Elementary A/B Honor Roll – Students must earn a letter grade of “A” or “B” in all subject areas for each of the first 3 quarters.  The 4th quarter is not considered since it is not yet complete at the time of the awards day.

Yorktown Elementary Perfect Attendance – Students must be present each and every day to receive the perfect attendance award.  Students who are tardy or attending appointments who miss more than 2 hours of school will be counted as absent for a half-day.  Bereavement  Days and Religious Holiday are exempt.

The cost of a school breakfast will remain the same for the 2014-2015 school year.  However, an increase of .25¢
per school lunch has been approved.  Listed below are some of the factors considered in determining the necessity for the meal price increase:

  • Increased cost of food, cleaning and disposables.
  • All grains served must be “whole grain”, thus resulting in higher food cost.
  • Serving sizes of fruits and vegetables for breakfast/lunch have increased.
  • Increased cost of new equipment, equipment repairs and operational supplies.

Breakfast:
Reduced:  .30¢
Paid:  $1.50
Adult: $1.80

Lunch:
Reduced:  .40¢
Paid:  $2.45
Adult:  $3.45
