YES to Celebrate YHS
Homecoming -- YES will have a
different dress-up day each day Sept. 28 to Oct. 2. Visit the YES website
calendar for the themes. Additionally, the YES student council will
sponsor a dance on Fri., Oct. 2 from 2:30 to 3:45 PM in the YES gym.
Registration forms will be emailed to parents, but are also available at
school. Forms and $3 are due by Thurs., Oct. 1. NO LATE REGISTRATIONS WILL BE TAKEN. The
annual homecoming game will be held on Fri., Oct 2 at 7:30 PM at the YHS
football field. The homecoming parade is scheduled for Sat., Oct. 3 at
10:00 AM in downtown Yorktown.

The PVE and YES PTO has scheduled a Zumbathon for Thurs., Oct. 29 in the PVE gym from 6:30 to 8:00 PM. The cost is $15 for adults and includes a gift at registration. Mark you calendar now and plan to attend to dance, shake and sweat to raise money for PVE and YES schools. Students must be accompanied by an adult, but may attend for free.
The PTO has also scheduled a family Skating Party for Sun., Oct. 25 at Gibson's Skating Arena from 5:00 to 7:00 PM. Families are invited to wear a costume and/or orange. Please do not wear face masks or scary costumes. The cost is $2 for admission and $2 for skate rental. Students must be accompanied by an adult.
YES Mass Emails -- If you are not receiving emails from Yorktown Elementary and would like to do so, call the office at 759-2770. The school sends most communication via email.
"Navigating Literacy Through Flight" will be offered to students and parents on Mon., Oct. 5 at 6:30 PM in the YHS auditorium. Parents are encouraged to access digital books on space on flight at http://starwalkkids.com
(use password YCS) to prepare for this event. Several prizes will be given away to those who attend. A speaker will explain the NASA connection to the Muncie AMA. Plan to attend this fun, family friendly event.
Art instructors will soon be doing a papier-mâché
project at YES and need newspapers. Any donations may be taken to the art
room. Thank you in advance for your support.
Honor Day – The YES Honor Day is a day to recognize 5th
grade students for being on the A or A/B honor roll, for having perfect
attendance (*see below), for their citizenship, or for being involved in
activities at Yorktown Elementary. It is
not an elementary graduation ceremony.
We would like to honor all of our fifth grade students, but cannot
recognize a student who does not qualify to be honored. We suggest you encourage your child to be
involved in one or more of the following activities to assist our staff to get
as many students recognized as possible.

We also recognize “spirited campers” that are
chosen while at Camp Tecumseh.
Honor Day will be tentatively be held on Thursday, May 19, 2016. The date could be changed if we have another
winter of several missed days due to inclement weather.
*Yorktown Elementary All “A” Honor Roll –
Students must earn an “A” in all subject areas for each of the first 3
quarters. The 4th quarter is not considered since it is not
yet complete at the time of the awards day.

must earn a letter grade of “A” or “B” in all subject areas for each of the

Elementary Perfect Attendance – Students must be present each and every day to
receive the perfect attendance award. Students who are tardy or attending
appointments who miss more than 2 hours of school will be counted as absent for
a half-day. Bereavement Days and Religious Holiday are exempt.

The YES library needs volunteers
Monday thru Friday 9:20 to 9:55, 1:00 to 1:35 and 1:40 to 2:15. The greatest times needed are: Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 1:00 to 2:15. Contact Mrs. Melia Ozbun at 759-2717 or by email at email@example.com

YES participates in the Box Tops program. We receive 10¢ for each Box Top. During the school year, a monthly contest is held for the most Box Tops collected. The next collection day is Fri., Oct. 30. The winning classroom receives an ice cream treat party. Mrs. Boone's classroom won the September contest by collecting 718 Box Tops. Additionally, YES collects Labels for Education. We do not receive money from Labels for Education, but the opportunity to "purchase" items for our school from the Labels for Education catalog.

Parents--please note that attendance letters are mandated by the State of Indiana. Attendance letters are sent weekly.
Y.E.S. School hours: Students may enter the building at 7:30; school begins at 7:50. Dismissal is at 2:20.
NWEA (Northwest Evaluation Association)
provides an assessment called MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) that allows
educators and parents to track student achievement, growth, and needs in the
areas of Math, Reading, and Language Arts. These assessments are taken 3
times per school year and provide great information from academic year to
academic year. Parents are encouraged to become familiar with the NWEA by reading the document below and visiting the NWEA website at https://www.nwea.org/resources/parent-toolkit/. Questions about NWEA may be directed to YES Principal, Heather Lucas.
On days of school closings and/or delays, information can be received through the following communication services:

If you are not signed up to receive automated calls or mass emails from Yorktown Community Schools, contact the YES office at 759-2770 to get signed up.
On two hour delay days, child care is offered at Yorktown Elementary for students in kindergarten through fifth grades. Parents may drop off any K-6 student at YES's main door starting at 7:30 AM. No prior sign-up or spot reservation is necessary. Qualified school personnel will oversee supervision. The cost is $4.00 in cash upon arrival for each student using the child care. Breakfast will not be served; however, students are encouraged to bring their own breakfast with them. In case of unforeseen school closures on days that are initially delayed, parents must pick up students by 10:00 AM or a fee of $50 will be assessed to cover the cost of staffing. Bus transportation for K-2 students will be provided to transport students to PVE at the conclusion of the delay.
The YES Clinic is in need of gently used or new children's sweatpants sizes 8 and up. Donations may be dropped off in the YES office.
Yorktown Ministry gives away food to local families in need the third Saturday
of each month from 9:00 to 11:00 AM at 9108 Sutherland Ave. (corner of Broadway
and Sutherland in Yorktown). A photo ID and proof of residency in Mt.
Pleasant Township is required.
