Votes Needed – YES student Katie Smitson is a finalist in the Ben’s Beginners Cooking Contest, a program to encourage children to make healthier choices by getting them interested in cooking at an early age.  The contest was created to empower parents to connect with their children one meal at a time and aims to make cooking an enjoyable activity that brings families together.  Please vote by Wed., Oct. 29th by visiting www.unclebens.com to view and vote for Katie’s family’s video.  Once you are on the site, click on the “watch videos and vote” button and search by “Katie” or “Katie's Rice and Bean Salad”.  Once you find Katie’s family’s video, you may click the “vote” button.  If Katie’s family’s video is selected as one of the five grand prize winners, YES will win a $30,000 cafeteria makeover.

YES will hold a canned food drive the week of Oct. 27th.  YES and YMS will have a competition for the most cans collected.  If YES wins, Mr. Braun, YMS Dean of Students/Athletic Director, will lead the YES Fall Parade in costume with Miss Lucas on Oct. 31st.  If YMS wins, Miss Lucas will wash dishes at YMS.  Help YES win the contest to keep Miss Lucas from washing dishes.  Wouldn’t everyone like to see Mr. Braun in a costume picked out by Miss Lucas?  A second canned food drive competition will be held by the YES student council.  The class who collects the most canned goods will be treated to a popcorn party.  Please consider donating canned goods to the canned food drive.  Many local families will be helped through this event.

Yorktown Elementary holds an annual Honor Day each year in May to recognize students for a variety of activities and achievements.  Two awards that students often receive are Perfect Attendance and Honor Roll.  Due to questions in the past, Yorktown Elementary would like to clarify the guidelines to receive these awards in May.

Yorktown Elementary All “A” Honor Roll – Students must earn an “A” in all subject areas for each of the first 3 quarters.  The 4th quarter is not considered since it is not yet complete at the time of the awards day.

Yorktown Elementary A/B Honor Roll – Students must earn a letter grade of “A” or “B” in all subject areas for each of the first 3 quarters.  The 4th quarter is not considered since it is not yet complete at the time of the awards day.

Yorktown Elementary Perfect Attendance – Students must be present each and every day to receive the perfect attendance award.  Students who are tardy or attending appointments who miss more than 2 hours of school will be counted as absent for a half-day.  Bereavement  Days and Religious Holiday are exempt.

Reach Yorktown Ministry gives away food to local families in need the third Saturday of each month from 9:00 to 11:00 AM at 9108 Sutherland Ave. (corner of Broadway and Sutherland in Yorktown).  A photo ID and proof of residency in Mt. Pleasant Township is required.

The cost of a school breakfast will remain the same for the 2014-2015 school year.  However, an increase of .25¢
per school lunch has been approved.  Listed below are some of the factors considered in determining the necessity for the meal price increase:

  • Increased cost of food, cleaning and disposables.
  • All grains served must be “whole grain”, thus resulting in higher food cost.
  • Serving sizes of fruits and vegetables for breakfast/lunch have increased.
  • Increased cost of new equipment, equipment repairs and operational supplies.

Breakfast:
Reduced:  .30¢
Paid:  $1.50
Adult: $1.80

Lunch:
Reduced:  .40¢
Paid:  $2.45
Adult:  $3.45

YES is again participating in the Box Tops program.  We receive 10¢ for each Box Top.  The next collection day is Fri., Oct. 31st.  A monthly contest is held for the most Box Tops collected.  The winning classroom receives an ice cream treat party.  Mrs. Stagge's fourth grade classroom won the September contest.  Additionally, YES collects Labels for Education.  We do not receive money from Labels for Education, but the opportunity to "purchase" items for our school from the Labels for Education catalog.
